Privacy is another reason for using cash. It's pretty hard to create a consumer profile of you if you are paying with cash.

I used to try to pay cash for stuff because the minor psychic pain of taking it out of your pocket and giving it to the store clerk gives a mild disincentive to pay. Also cuts down on splurges as if you run out of cash, well, you can't buy anymore! Kept me from breaking the bank at bookstores.

Finally had to quit around COVID, and credit had the advantage I could look at my bank account and see where the money was going from the credit card statements.

But, maybe this is a good way for you to build frugal habits too. Tricky as a young person--I know rent and food are much more expensive now and salaries are lower, but maybe it's helpful for stuff on the margins?

I have relatives in the fatherland and they are by far some of the most frugal people on the planet.

I believe only 10 or 15% of the population even carries a credit card. Maybe that’s why the Germans are considered dull and boring..
